Naismith (outside) covered 6 furlongs at Santa Anita in 1:13.20 this morning. The 3-year-old colt breezed in company with graded stake winner, Extra Hope. The duo broke off from the 5/8th’s pole, completing 5 furlongs at the wire in 59.80, and finished the final 1/8th of a mile in 13.40.
Naismith worked well but did get a touch tired in the final 1/8th of a mile. Trainer Richard Mandella wanted to see Naismith relax more early on in this workout and being critical, was hoping for a better finish. “He just wants to go”, chuckled Mandella. Nevertheless, Richard was pleased that the colt held his own with a workmate of this quality. In the meantime, Richard’s goal is to continue to teach Naismith to relax/settle earlier on in his training which will allow for him to finish more effectively. |
