Thanks to all for the well-wishes, but I’m doing the same thing I’ve been doing the past year or two, working in publicity and communications on a consulting or part-time basis for core clients Kentucky and National HBPA, Kentucky Downs and Ellis Park (with some other jobs at certain times of the year, such as the NTRA’s National Horseplayers Championship, the Preakness and Oaklawn Park) and last winter adding another contract position as communications director for the Kentucky Equine Education Project. I put all my contract work under the banner of JR Communications LLC, which is a one-person LLC: me.

Longtime Courier-Journal turf writer Jennie Rees went out with a bang.
A story Rees penned in the final week of her 34-year career at the CJ, a tale of trainer Dale Romans’ dealings with dyslexia, earned the Lexington, Ky., native her fifth Media Eclipse Award announced Tuesday, this one in the Feature/Commentary category.

A five-time Eclipse Award winner and 2014 inductee into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame’s Joe Hirsch Media Roll of Honor, left newspaper journalism and the (Louisville) Courier-Journal after 34 years to specialize in horse-racing communications, advocacy, and her passion of fan education.

Rees and Sullivan will be presented trophies Jan. 16 at the 45th Eclipse Awards Dinner at Florida’s Gulfstream Park.
“This whole year has been tremendous,” Rees said in a statement. “To be voted in the Joe Hirsch wing of the Hall of Fame, covering a Triple Crown winner and a Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland. I am proud that Dale’s story was written during a very busy week at the Breeders’ Cup. This was the kind of story that you want to spend time writing at other times of the year, and you want to take a week to write it. I think it’s a tribute to the power of the subject and Dale’s willingness to open up about a very difficult subject.”
Rees, whose husband Pat Dupuy is a trainer, has written for the Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Thoroughbred Daily News since leaving the CJ after the Breeders’ Cup. She plans to advocate for the racing industry in a different role as her career continues – and help around the Dupuy barn.
